The UM-OAIC is a National Institute on Aging (NIA) Older Americans Independence Center investigating innovative ways to maintain or restore independence for older adults. The UM-OAIC partners with several academic affiliates, which afford the Center cutting edge resources and relationships to advance the science of exercise rehabilitation in stroke, hip fracture and other conditions associated with aging. Stroke Survivors Needed Do you know someone who has had a stroke and has arm or leg weakness? A study is being conducted investigating the benefits of exercise after stroke. REHAB: Reshaping Exercise Habits and Beliefs (home-based rehabilitation research program for individuals with new strokes) STEPs: Stroke Treadmill Exercise Prescriptions (exercise research program for individuals with chronic stroke)
UBAT and SAEBO (upper extremity rehabilitation research program) Training Adaptive Physical Activity in Stroke (TAPAS) is exploring the use of group exercise classes and exercise homework, to improve fitness, balance and walking, and quality of life after stroke. Strength Training After Stroke (SMART) works with stroke survivors over a 3 month period to improve the major muscle groups of the legs using specialized strength training equipment.
IRIS (weight loss research program for men and women ages 45 to 80; women must be post menopausal for at least one year)
STX (exercise and weight loss research program for men and women ages 20 to 40, 50 to 75; women ages 50 to 75 must be post menopausal for at least one year)
